Have you ever received a sign from a higher power letting you know that you are on track and doing the right thing? I have known for a while that I've had a passion for turning wood into something beautiful, but I did not know that wood had a passion for me! That is until when in my local hardware store a piece of wood called me by name:
Comically, I didn't end up buying this piece of wood, because it wasn't up to my high standards of wood quality. However, I considered it a sign that I am supposed to be making cigar box instruments out of 1'' by 2'' pieces of wood, some hand tools and wood glue.
Now there is a long and rich American history to Cigar box Guitar making, but I will save that lecture for another time. This blog is about my destiny as a Cigar Box Guitar builder. Everything I do I seem to be creating. At day I create IT solutions for my company and at night I sleep. Then when I am not tired on the weekends I can be found playing one of my many guitars or making a brand new one out of a cigar box!
I started building Cigar Box Guitars in college after watching a YouTube video of a man playing a Didley Bow (A cigar box with a broom handle as the neck and 1 string played with a slide). The first guitar I built failed and snapped in half when I put the strings on, but I kept trying and am now proud to say I can create guitars that look and sound good!
One of my proudest cigar box creations can be seen below in the video. I gave it to this little boy who asked for one of my guitars for his birthday. I decided to make him a Kid's Sized Ukulele that was just his size!
